Identify keynote speakers for the morning
and afternoon sessions.
-
Dr. Nanez has invited Dr. Eugene
Garcia and Dr. Raul Yzaguirre to serve as co-keynote speakers for
the morning session.
-
Note: Unfortunately, Dr.
Garcia has notified Dr. Nanez that he is unavailable due to a
prior out-of-town commitment on the conference day. Response
from Dr. Raul Yzaguirre is pending. A replacement for Dr. Garcia
will be sought.
-
Rosie Lopez has been invited as
keynote speaker from the field of higher education public
policy/political activism. A second individual from this field will
be sought as co-keynote speaker with Rosie for the afternoon
session.
-
Note: Dr. Cleopatria
Martinez has indicated that Rosie Lopez is available and willing
to serve as a keynote speaker. Identification of the second
keynote speaker is pending.
-
Rather than have symposia consisting
of panels on topics with conference attendees serving as audiences
and discussants, the plan is to follow the keynote addresses with an
interactive working conference. The keynote topics will be of
current and future importance to Latino higher education. One topic
will be covered in the morning and another in the afternoon
sessions. Each keynote speaker will be asked to address a topic of
relevance to the session s/he will serve as keynote (opening
speaker) for. A set of subtopics for accomplishing the goals of the
two major topics will be formulated. Attendees will be divided into
small groups and separated by subtopic. Each group will choose a
discussion leader, time keeper, and recorder. The charge for the
groups will be to thoroughly explore their subtopics and develop a
core of action items for AACHE to pursue during the year and into
the future. A possible topic for one session may be: “Impacting
pre-K – 12 and 24+ Latino Education and Pedagogy for the 21st
century”. Dr. Eugene Garcia and Dr. Raul Yzaguirre would be natural
keynote speakers on this topic. (Please see note above regarding Dr.
Garcia’s unavailability for serving as a keynote speaker). The
second keynote topic may be something to the effect, “Impacting
pre-K – 12 and 24+ Latino Education Public Policy and Implementation
for the 21st Century”. (As stated above, Rosie Lopez is a
confirmed keynote speaker and the second speaker on this topic is
TBD).
Goal of the Working Conference:
To utilize the expertise of the keynote speakers and
conference participants to develop a plan of approach for AACHE and the greater
community to implement for the present (2008) and beyond. By doing so, AACHE
will be on-track for impacting Latino research-informed education/pedagogy and
public policy at the state and national level.
